Bells rang 39 times tonight at the Antioch Baptist Church, signifying every year Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was alive.
Celebrations of his life were held across the country today, 50 years after his assassination.
At Antioch, services were followed by a march to Martin Luther King Jr. Park as part of a re-enactment of Dr. King’s sanitation strike.
"He gave his life, that ultimate sacrifice, for that movement. for the civil rights of people of color in this country," said Ulysees Wingo, pastor at Antioch Baptist Church.
In Tennessee, thousands of people spilled into the streets of Memphis to march and honor Dr. King right where he was killed.
